Period 1 - Spanish 5 AP/GT

Phrases of the day: manos a la obra / hay que + inf. / haber de + inf.

Today students took a quiz on the use of verbs in different contexts, with a focus on the subjunctive. To end class, students also practiced more with the si clauses.

Periods 2 and 3 - French 2

Students warmed up with reviewing the expressions with faire. Students also developed this with some listening comprehension, with the workbook, page 23, activity 2C. Students ended class with a worksheet using expressions with avoir and faire. Students will complete this for homework. They will also identify all of the passé composé verbs in the activity. This will be gone over on Monday. Students were again reminded to study the rest of chapter 3 for Monday. Students were reminded that the lesson 3 quiz is next Friday.

Period 5 - Spanish 3

Students started class with a review activity of the imperfect progressive. All answers were discussed and gone over. Students saw a power point testing their knowledge of 5B vocabulary. Students also completed an activity where they were asked, in Spanish, to describe 15 words or phrases from 5A and 5B. Students ended class with a quick power point testing their knowledge of the preterite. Students will have their test on 5A and 5B next Friday.

Period 6 - French 5 AP/GT

Phrases of the day: s'en vouloir à quelqu'un / faire de l'auto-stop

Students completed a subjunctive activity in pairs. This was collected. Students ended class with completing "Rejoinders" series 2. Students will have a quiz on Monday on the uses of the subjunctive and the indicative.

Periods 1 and 6 - Spanish AP/GT and French AP/GT

There was no class today for either class.

Periods 2 and 3 - French 2

Students had a warm up activity with the verb AVOIR. This was gone over and handed in. students then orally completed activity 3 on text, page 57. Students continued to develop their skills with AVOIR completing workbook page 25, activities A1 and A2. Students ended class by completing an exit pass once again testing their knowledge of a variety of idiomatic expressions with AVOIR. During period 3, students listened to the listening comprehension activity on page 23 of the workbook. This activity is based on the Video-scene for lesson 3. Students were once again asked to study pages 56 and 58. Students were told of a quiz on lesson 3 next Friday. Other unannounced pop quizzes may take place before then.

Period 5 - Spanish 3

Students had a chance to watch 5 minutes of the continuing coverage of the miner rescue in Chile. Students were asked to write down as many words as possible they recognized. Many of these words actually come from chapters 5A and 5B, dealing with tragedies, first responders and rescues. After, we went over the homework assignment from the "Practice" workbook, page 107. Students ended class by responding to "Qué estabas haciendo cuando...? by writing appropriate and logical responses to a variety of sentence starters provided to them on the screen. Students were reminded of the test on 5A and 5B sometime toward the end of next week.

Period 1 - Spanish 5 AP/GT

Phrase of the day: zurdo / diestro / ambidiestro

Students took a quiz today on the uses of the subjunctive or the indicative in nominal and relative clauses. After the quiz, students continued their study of hypothetical situations using clauses with the word si. Students worked together to complete a practice worksheet providing different examples of these. They will have another quiz on the subjunctive on Thursday.

Periods 2 and 3 - French 2

Students warmed up with a board activity using the verb être. Students then read the "Video Scene" for lesson 3, picking out the various expressions with avoir. Students were asked to make a guess based on context and/or previous knowledge what these expressions meant. Students took turns reading and discussing the dialogue. Students concluded the class by practicing the verb avoir. Students' exit pass was text, page 57, activities 1 and 2. Students were asked to read and study pages 56 and 58, talking about the verbs avoir and faire for next class.

Period 5 - Spanish 3

Students began class by completing a worksheet testing their knowledge of telling of past events using the preterite and imperfect progressive. Students developed this concept by completing a listening activity from the "Writing Audio Video" workbook, page 102, activity 9. Students were also led through a writing activity from the same workbook, on page 104, testing the irregular preterite forms. Students will complete "Practice" workbook page 107 for next class. As a reminder, students will have a test by the end of next week.

Period 6 - French 5 AP/GT

Phrase of the day: avoir le cafard

Students took a quiz on the uses of the past tenses of the subjunctive and indicative.

Period 1 - Spanish 5 AP/GT

Phrase of the day: hacerse / ponerse + adj. / volverse / convertirse en / llegar a ser

We discussed the completed writing and strategies of how to best address a writing prompt of that nature. Students also completed a practice activity on the use of the subjunctive and indicative in context. Students will have a quiz tomorrow.

Periods 2 and 3 - French 2

Students wrote a letter to young Senegalese school children. This was a wonderful activity that not only asked students to practice writing a letter, but implementing the vocabulary and grammatical structures learned in lessons 1 and 2. Students were provided with a variety of ways to address and sign off a letter to friends. All letters were collected and will be sent directly to the school children later this week. Students also received some background information about Sénégal, its capital city, as well as life in this West African nation.

Period 5 - Spanish 3

Students warmed up with an activity from the "Practice" workbook, page 106, Students also received two worksheets practicing the formation and usage of the imperfect progressive with the preterite tense. All answers were gone over on the board. Students will have their unit test on chapters 5A and 5B by the end of next week.

Period 6 - French 5 AP/GT

Phrase of the day: se vouloir + adj.

Students warmed up with a subjunctive activity. Students also talked further about the similarities and differences between several African national anthems. We discussed the poem Femme Noire by Ségnhor. Finally, students viewed a report by Richard Engel of NBC news, in which he travelled to the African nation of Mali. There, he met with and travelled with a group of touareg nomads. The piece lasted about 7 minutes. After, we discussed a bit of the cultural aspects of a nation like Mali. Students have a quiz on the subjunctive tomorrow.
